Magnum Assault Tactical 5.0 - vegan tactical and hiking boots

  • Állapot: Aktuális

Since I started backpacking a few years ago (covering a distance with a large backpack at a fast pace), good shoes have always been a priority. Really, shoes or boots? What is best, what is most suitable. Fortunately, I was able to test several types of footwear and experience shows that light but stable shoes are the best. What is difficult is better from a training point of view, what is easy is less safe and stable. When the Magnum Assault Tactical 5.0 boot came into my hands, I immediately encountered a new feeling. The shoes are also vegan... this means a lot to me (and to more and more people), it is only positively related to performance.

From now on, I will call them boots, although this category is not entirely clear. After reading the test, most people have the same opinion - it could be more of a cross-country running shoe with a high leg, but it is still a boot due to its many features. These are complicated things...

First impressions

Taking the box in hand, my first question was: "Didn't they put the shoes in it?". The total weight of the two pairs of high boots is less than 1 kg, barely more than a good running shoe. In hand this feeling was enhanced, its feel, flexibility and small details all suggested that I was dealing with a shoe designed for speed and stability.

No matter how I looked, I couldn't find anything in it that wasn't cross-country running shoes. You stem... yes. Besides that? Nothing. The question arose: ""Will it behave like a running shoe, or will it really have the characteristics of a boot?" I quickly got the answer, as our first real hike together led to the nearby rocky Pilis peak.

In addition to being as comfortable, flexible and dynamic as a good cross-country shoe, the high upper really provides support, even when running down technical slopes, keeping your ankles secure. This was a very pleasant surprise at first. More similar ones followed later...

It's true - the Magnum Assault boot is also like a good running shoe in that you don't need to break in and get used to it. Essentially, the first use was a serious tour, on more difficult terrain, with a 15 kg bag, partly running. Perfect at first! But how to proceed...?

Details, experiences

I chose this boot specifically for backpacking training. This means that even with a heavier (10-20 kg) backpack, you can run stably and safely for longer distances, regardless of terrain and weather conditions. The Magnum Assault Tactical 5.0 is the perfect equipment for this, except for very wet and muddy, winter and high mountain terrains!

I used the boots mainly in dry weather on distances between 10-25 km, with a bag between 12-17 kg. We have been in rain, mud, streams, steep climbs and slopes, but also sand and concrete. Mainly backpacking, but for the sake of the test I also took it on a "plain" cross-country run. Of course, for more difficult terrain.

The most important impressions and experiences

  • dries quickly (either after rain or after crossing streams)
  • keeps the ankle stable
  • the corset never came undone (and because of the test, I also used it with a plain bow, unlike my usual)
  • the sole held and gripped well on almost all terrains (on which I had the opportunity to test).
  • the sole is comfortable, flexible, yet hard, which we can really appreciate on very rocky terrain
  • the toe of the boot withstands creasing and strong external influences well
  • there are no visible signs of damage over 300 km

I really like the color. It may sound strange, because you could ask "what's beautiful about an average brown shoe?", but the answer is simple: it blends in nicely with the environment in summer and autumn (this is important if I want to remain unnoticed in the wilderness - it's probably just as good in spring, just that I didn't try it), it didn't look muddy or dusty (and this is important when I get from the wilderness to the city). In addition, it is really easy to clean, either by simply washing it with a wet sponge, or by brushing the mud off with a slag. Even then, it dries quickly.

It can also be used well in wet and damp conditions, it is not waterproof, but it is water-repellent, i.e. it does not get wet in wet grass, mud, light rain, and of course it gets soaked when crossing water or in heavy rain. This is no problem at all in warmer weather, but certainly not the best in winter. But as long as I run at a fast pace, this is not a problem even in winter - I know this based on my decades of cross-country running experience.

Design, materials

I had previously read about the pocket for shoe laces, several people criticized that it does not hold properly. During weeks of testing in mud, rain, running, hiking, and often wading through water, the pocket never let go of the corset. Maybe it's an improved version or because of my previous Salomon experience (I've been using a similar system there for more than 10 years) I hide the lacing better... I don't know. In any case, the system worked 100%. The multi-reinforced plastic shoelace is a very well-designed part of the boot anyway, it works perfectly.

Upper part - Softly padded, with a slightly asymmetrical design, which provides a high degree of free movement with adequate stability. The inner tread is designed to stabilize and support the foot in its natural position and rolling motion. The area of the heel and leg is stiffened and holds firmly. There is enough space for the toes, so overall the muscles of the sole can relax optimally to support the foot in its work. The inner lining dries quickly, conducts moisture well, and on the outside, the extremely strong KURIM mesh supplemented with the I-Shield breathable membrane wraps around the upper part.

Insole - Ortholite, which is strong, durable and has excellent ventilation and flexibly adapts to the shape of the foot.

Sole - consists of several special parts. The walking surface is made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, i.e. wear-resistant and adheres well to all surfaces. The midsole uses RECOIL technology, which is characterized by progressive shock absorption characteristics, high flexibility and long life. The pattern of the sole is quite unique, the surface consisting of small multi-directional hemispheres behaves excellently on rocks, rough terrain, mud and asphalt.

Recommendation

I strongly recommend it for all terrain movements where speed, dynamics, stability and weight are important. Durable, comfortable, light - specifically for sports and hiking, where either the terrain or the equipment is very difficult, but long distances must be covered as quickly as possible.

+ liked

  • weight: 427 gr (size 9 / 43)
  • flexibility
  • dynamics
  • comfort
  • ventilation
  • drying
  • durability

- disliked

  • I would strengthen the first part of the shoe a little (there have been no problems with it so far, but if there is ever a problem somewhere, it is probably here)

Technical matrix

Weight

 430 gr hiking boots!

Comfort

Perfect fit, sports shoe comfort, yet robust off-road feeling.

Material

It has excellent ventilation and does not get soaked in dewy grass or small puddles. (If it gets into water, it doesn't last long, but even then it doesn't let the water through right away.) Even after 300 km of use in the autumn, often muddy terrain, there is no visible damage.

Sole

  • concrete 5
  • rocky terrain 5
  • forest terrain 4.5
  • sand - loose soil 4
  • mud 4
  • deep mud 3
  • wet rocks - roots 4
  • sole cleaning 4

Lacing

Although the pocket has not released the laces so far, there is a high chance that they will fall out in wet and muddy conditions. A little extra rubber would fit in the bottom of the pocket.

Others

If we are not planning a tour on a high mountain and/or in extreme cold, then it is a perfect 3-season boot. It is also absolutely recommended for running and jogging in winter.
